Peru is a country in western South America, bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Its geography varies from the arid lanky plains of the Pacific coast to the 5,000-meter high peaks of the Andes Mountains, stretching from north to south in the center of the country, and the tropical forests of the Amazon Basin. These three geographical characteristics require different types of trucks to transport goods.

Pan-American Highway runs north-south through the whole length of the country and connects all major cities in the country’s coastal area. On the highway, medium- and heavy-duty trucks carry tons of goods and materials. Fruits and vegetable as well as woods grown and cut from the Amazon Basin are carried on medium- and heavy-duty trucks to the coastal areas over the Andes Mountains. Therefore, they want tough and powerful trucks which can run on rugged roads and steep slopes. In such major cities as Lima, roads are narrow, so they have to control traffic to avoid traffic jam, especially the traffic of medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Only light-duty trucks can run in the major cities without restrictions, and therefore they are more often used for delivery in the cities.

There are many mines in Peru, so mining is one of their major industries. Such natural resources as gold, silver and copper, are carried on heavy-duty trucks. In addition, other types of various vehicles are used in relation to mining an altitude of 3,000 meters or more; light-duty trucks are used to transport foods and commodities to support lives of mining workers, and buses are used to carry such workers to mines. Natural gas was discovered and, as it’ known that there is very little harmful emissions from natural gas vehicles, it also is used as a fuel for vehicles. The number of buses running on natural gas for public services has been increasing in Lima, and in the future, they expect increase of trucks running on natural gas.
