<New ELF Product Overview>
Interior and Exterior

Based on Isuzu's design philosophy "HEXA-POD*: a tense hexahedron" , the interior and exterior are thoroughly revamped, creating a lean yet functional design.
The new ELF received 2006 Good Design Award. (High roof cab, wide cab)

[ Exterior ]
Three cab variations are available according to application: regular cab, high roof cab with a newly set width, and wide cab.
A 1.8m-wide high roof cab is available only for heavy-duty trucks in the categories*1. The new cab, extended the cab width of the current ELF high roof cab by 75mm to 1770mm, and successfully reduced the cab-body gap and increased body capacity (overall width) while improving habitability.
In the high roof cab with a newly set width and the wide cab, upright front pillars and body sides are used, contributing to the spacious cabin room.
Around the front cab, parting lines are effectively used for styling, eliminating the need of extra decoration.
Aerodynamic design is employed in the shapes of the corners and roof to realize environmental and economical performance.
In order to guarantee smooth egress and ingress, the grip-type outside door handles that can be handled with gloves, doors opening to approximately 70 degrees outward, larger inside door handles are adopted. (Excluding regular cab)

[ Interior ]
The new ELF employs a "hard wave" instrument panel designed in the motif of wave movement. To provide comfortable driving environment, the cabin offers spacious room allowing drivers to move safely.
Equipment is arranged functionally as the result of efforts to provide those fit comfortably in drivers' hands and well organized visually and functionally.

Engine

D-CORE, the highly efficient next generation diesel engine series employing Isuzu original ideas, technologies, and performance, will be at the core of diesel engines in the ages to come. In order to continuously achieve "economical performance" together with "environmental performance", that is a major challenge for trucks, at a higher level, technologies that "the leading diesel company, Isuzu" boasts were brought together to develop world-class engines with "small displacement and supercharging function".
In pursuit of compact lightweight engines with higher torque per displacement, various performances required for engines including those associated with fuel efficiency, weight, and exhaust gas were boosted.
The new ELF is mounted with the intercooler turbo diesel engine, type 4JJ1 or type 4HK1.
[ The engines comply with the New Long-term Emission Regulations, have acquired a certifications for 2005 low emission standard for heavy-duty vehicles and a low emission certification for seven prefectures in Osaka and its environs ]
The 4JJ1-TCS (150PS) high-power engine positioned as representative engine is widely applicable to the models in the new ELF series. 4HK1-TCN(155PS) is available in the wide cab 4-ton class, 4JJ1-TCN(110PS) in the 1.5-ton class.
The 1.5-ton vehicles, GVW 5-ton vehicles, 2-ton 2WD vehicles equipped with the newly developed 4JJ1-TC engine achieved the heavy-duty vehicle fuel economy standards* (Categories T1-T3) for the first time in respective classes.
The newly developed 4JJ1-TC engine adopts VGS (variable capacity type) turbo *6, realizing supercharged engines. The charging ratio increased by VGS turbo, high-pressure injection by common rail, and the EGR rate raised by larger capacity cooled EGR improved the combustion condition drastically. Making good use of swirl analysis, combustion analysis and other cutting-edge computer analytical technologies, the supercharged engine was developed. Isuzu original control technologies are applied to the engine control software to optimally control the injection system, VGS turbo, etc. is introduced to attain high engine charging ratio. Furthermore, the intercooler with larger capacity contributes to low-speed torque, improvement in acceleration, fuel efficiency and reducing particulate matter (PM).
With modified engines and low and comfortable noise, the external noise is reduced by 2.2dB from the current ELF.
Automatic idling stop and engine start system is installed as standard equipment. The new ELF is the first light-duty truck that is equipped with this system, which guarantees easy idling stop, contributes to reducing emission gas and noise pollution, and improves fuel efficiency.

Transmission

The new ELF is equipped with Smoother Ex, a successor of Smoother-E series evolved from manual transmissions. The Smoother Ex is Isuzu original easy driving system based on manual transmissions. With automatic gear shifting and sequential manual gear shifting available, the transmission can be operated by AT-exclusive drivers expected to grow continuously in the future. It employs vertical shift pattern and a gate for sequential manual, providing more efficient shift operation. The improvement of hydraulic mechanism and control logics guarantees a smooth gear shifting from start, to acceleration, to hill climbing, and to stop, much advanced from the present ELF.

Suspension / Chassis Frame

Independent suspension is introduced in NHR as well as a newly added 4WD model carrying up to 3 ton, complementing the line up.
Properties of coil springs and shock absorbers were reviewed to be best matched with the new cabs and new frames, achieving more comfort riding.
The weight is reduced without decreasing the strength of the frames by optimizing the height of frame, the width of flange, and the thickness of each board. Furthermore, in order to reduce weight without sacrificing the strength and rigidity, a web joint structure is used in the cross members of wide cab trucks, providing a flat surface to the top of the frame.

* 1.5-ton and 2 to 3 ton cabover truck category excluding hybrid vehicles
*6. A system that changes the air intake area of a turbo to improve air-filling efficiency so that a highly efficient turbo effect can be generated from low engine speed.

Outline of the concerned laws and regulations

Revision of Driver's License System (Schedule for July 2007)
A new category of medium duty vehicles with GVW(Gross Vehicle Weight) from 5tons to less than 11 tons will be created. Accordingly, medium class driver's license and medium class second category driver's license will be created.
The AT only driver's license will exit only in the ordinary driver's license category. There will be no AT only driver's license in the category of driver's license for medium-duty as well as heavy- duty vehicles.
A person who is 20 year old or older and has held an ordinary driver's license for two years or longer is eligible for obtaining a driver's license for medium-duty vehicles. (Same as the current driver's license for heavy-duty vehicles)
[ A person who is 21 years old or older and has held an ordinary driver's license for two years or longer is eligible for obtaining a second class driver's license for medium duty vehicles. (Same as the current second class driver's licenses for heavy-duty and ordinary vehicles) ]
After the revision, a person eligible for taking a driver's license for heavy-duty vehicles must be 21 years older or older and has held a ordinary driver's license for 3 years or longer. (Same as the current driver's license for extra heavy-duty vehicles)
Driving test on the road and a lecture program at the time of obtaining a driver's license will be introduced to the new driver's license system.
After the revision, a person who has only an ordinary driver's license will be driving without a license if he drives a vehicle with GVW of 5 tons or more.

Revision of Energy Saving Laws (From April 1, 2006)
Applicable to "specified transport companies" which have 200 trucks or more for cargo transport and to "specified cargo owners" who consign cargo transport of 30 million freight ton-km for their business activities.
The above parties must formulate an "energy saving plan" and a "report on consumption of energy, etc." and submit them to the national government once a year.
If they fail to take appropriate measure to conserve energy, legal actions may be taken against them.

New Long-term Emission Gas Regulation
Regulations applicable to new cars and vehicles produced by automobile manufacturers.
The regulated value of PM is 0.027g/kW•h reduced by 85% from the new short-term regulation value of 0.18g/kW•h. Nox level is 2.0g/kW•h, the world's severest, which was reduced by more than 40% from 3.38g/kW•h.
Driving mode for measurement is changed to JE05 mode, which is much closer than the previous 13 mode (constant driving mode) to the actual driving condition. JE05 is a transient driving mode and is able to measure in more detail the characteristics of transient emission gas that change according to driving conditions).
